ASTM F88 Seal Strength Test Equipment for Flexible Barrier Materials
Seal strength is an essential part of the packaging industry. Without properly sealed packaging, medical devices and food items cannot be guaranteed sterile. Testing standard ASTM F88 is a common method to test the quality of seal strength on packaging.
ASTM F88
Seal strength is the force required to separate two flexible components of the package. A universal testing machine is needed to measure seal strength. First, prepare the sealed packaging for testing by cutting to the dimensions shown in ASTM F88. Clamp each side of the test specimen in a testing machine. Align the more rigid side of the sample to be clamped in the top grip. The seal should be tested at a rate of grip separation of 200 to 300 mm/min. (8 to 12 in./min). For each test, report the maximum force achieved and the type of failure.
